"Jake's has been so much more than a bar. It's been late nights, game days, first dates, bad decisions, lifelong friendships." That is how Jake's Dilemma said goodbye in early September. West Side Rag reported that after 32 years at 430 Amsterdam Avenue, the bar had lost its lease and would close its doors on October 18.
Since then, a surprising amount of the neighborhood's news has landed within a block or two of West 81st Street. A brewery opened across Amsterdam. A Broadway corner that lost its Starbucks in October 2025 gets an Italian café on November 6. The American Museum of Natural History opens two exhibitions in the same week. Then, on the day before Thanksgiving, the balloons go up beside the museum. The street's center of gravity is moving earlier in the day, away from the dance floor and toward coffee, brunch and museum hours.
Amsterdam Between 80th and 82nd, After Last Call
Jake's Dilemma described itself as "an old school pub vibe mixed with a downtown bar atmosphere." People knew it for late hours, sports on the screens and a dance floor, according to West Side Rag's coverage of the closing. Its owners also run The Gin Mill at 442 Amsterdam Avenue, and they pointed regulars there in their farewell.
"And while Jake's is closing, the party isn't. You'll still find us right next door at The Gin Mill, waiting with open arms."
So the late-night option on this stretch didn't disappear. It got smaller. The newest arrival on the block is aiming at a different hour of the day.
TALEA Beer Co. opened September 25 at 441 Amsterdam Avenue, between West 81st and 82nd. It took over the space St. James Gate left when the Irish pub closed in 2024. Tara Hankinson and LeAnn Darland founded TALEA in 2019. They started by selling beer door to door, then opened in Williamsburg, and this taproom is now one of six TALEA locations in the city. The beer list includes Al Dente, an Italian-style pilsner and the brewery's bestseller, plus sours like Rainbow Cookie. Hankinson told West Side Rag the menu runs all day, with "brunchy and lunch crowd favorites, entrees for evenings and kid friendly food." Both founders have young children and wanted a place that works for a date night and for a Sunday morning with the kids.
Jake's built its name on what happened after dark. TALEA opened across the avenue planning for strollers at brunch.
A few doors south, 7th Street Burger at 424 Amsterdam Avenue closed in late September because of a gas issue in the building. Its marketing manager told West Side Rag the problem had been fixed and the restaurant was waiting on final approval to reopen. The chain's own location page still shows the Upper West Side shop as temporarily closed, so check it before you walk over.
If you still want a later night nearby, the new option is three blocks north. Velvet Cowboy, a Western-themed bar, opened September 29 at 509 Amsterdam Avenue, between 84th and 85th, in the old Jacob's Pickles space and under the same ownership. The food menu is all $5 and includes Texas chili and Frito pie.
Broadway and 81st Gets a New Café on November 6
One avenue west, the same cross street gets a new morning anchor. West Side Rag reports that Eataly Caffè opens Friday, November 6, at 2252 Broadway, at West 81st Street. The space was a Starbucks until it closed in October 2025.
The menu covers espresso and cappuccino, sweet and savory pastries, and Roman-style pizza. The Upper West Side shop is the brand's fourth Eataly Caffè in New York, after the Upper East Side, Hudson Yards and Midtown. Opening weekend brings free mini hot chocolates, flower bouquets and gifts for the first 100 guests. In a statement West Side Rag published, Eataly North America president Craig Kennedy called it "an iconic corner of Broadway and West 81st Street."
Both corners of this strip of 81st now point the same way. TALEA serves brunch on Amsterdam, and a block west, Eataly Caffè brings espresso and pastries back to the corner Starbucks left in October 2025. The Broadway openings still on the way are sweets and snacks too:
- Doughnut Plant is coming to 2167 Broadway. Its CEO told West Side Rag it would open "sometime before the holiday season," with no date announced.
- Cold Stone Creamery is listed as coming soon at 2303 Broadway, between 83rd and 84th, also with no opening date.
The Museum Opens Two Shows in One Week
Walk east on 81st toward the park and the November calendar gets busier still. The American Museum of Natural History is opening two exhibitions four days apart, and they work differently.
The Nature of Color opens November 16 on the third floor and needs a separate ticket. Members get previews starting November 13. Monumental: The 3 WatchMen and Other Works by James Hart opens November 20 in the Contemporary Art Gallery of the Northwest Coast Hall on the first floor, and any admission ticket gets you in. It brings together 12 works by James Hart, one of Canada's best-known Northwest Coast artists, and centers on 3 WatchMen, a seven-foot carved pole from around 2020.
The museum's November calendar adds smaller dates around those openings.
- November 4: SciCafe, "Ticked Off"
- November 8: Member Storytime and Member Morning Hours
- November 13: Educators' Evening, "In Our Nature," and the first Nature of Color member preview
- November 15: OrigamiUSA's November Special Folding Fun Session
- November 16: The Nature of Color opens to the public
- November 20: Monumental opens
- November 24: Frontiers Lecture, "Clouds Across the Universe"
Most of these happen in daylight, and two are built for families. The month's busiest street, then, is mostly running on museum hours.
November 25, the Biggest Daytime Crowd of All
The month peaks the day before Thanksgiving. Per the city's event listing, Macy's Giant Balloon Inflation runs Wednesday, November 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the streets around the museum, with the public entrance at West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. Macy's own parade FAQ confirms the balloons will be inflated that Wednesday. It says details on public access will come later.
For 81st Street neighbors, the 2026 street plan is what matters most. Last year's city closure notice closed West 77th and West 81st between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, along with other streets, and said the NYPD could change restrictions as needed. That was the 2025 plan. Before you schedule a delivery, a car service or a pickup near the museum that Wednesday, check the city's weekday traffic advisories and the Macy's FAQ for the 2026 version.
The timing fits the rest of the month. The street's biggest gathering of the year is an afternoon event that ends at 6 p.m., right around when Jake's used to start filling up.
Lincoln Center, If You Head South
If you want an evening out after a month of afternoons on 81st, the Paul Taylor Dance Company is in the middle of its annual New York season at the David H. Koch Theater. It runs November 3 through 22 and includes world premieres and a New York premiere, as West Side Rag reported. Back on 81st, the month's dates in order are Eataly Caffè on November 6, the color exhibition on November 16, the Hart works on November 20 and the balloons on November 25. TALEA's taproom and The Gin Mill stay open between them on Amsterdam.
